January 2014 - Landowners earning $250 /MBF stumpage for hardwood mats

As anyone who has noticed loaded Cianbro trucks near transmission corridors, there's plenty of demand for 4' wide and 16' long construction mats. In fact, these mats are redefining "wooden gold from Maine's woods."

In our area, mills in Oxford and New Portland are paying $400 to $500/MBF for hardwood logs 10" diameter and 16' long. Knots are OK, along with some sweep. Essentially they are buying good quality firewood/hardwood pulpwood and paying log prices. Landowners are earning $250 to $300/MBF in stumpage. The outlook for continued buying appears excellent.

That's the biggest news in the latest stumpage prices. I'd characterize other stumpage prices as more of the same. For the most part, wood contracted to be cut this winter will sell for prices very similar to what we've seen for the last few years.
